My name is Jacob Taylor and I am a Senior french horn player at James Madison University pursuing a Bachelor’s in Music Education. While at James Madison University, I have been able to perform with the JMU Wind Symphony, Symphony Orchestra, Brass Band, Jazz Band, and multiple Brass and Woodwind Quintets. I student taught with TJ Miles at Willard Middle School and with Doug Martin at Langley High School.

Students are inherently musical; every single student that walks into my classroom deserves the chance to discover their potential to make music and express themselves both in and outside of instruction. Additionally, it is the job of the educator to use music as a means to help develop cognitive, social, and personal skills. My goal as a teacher is to give students access to both the aesthetic and academic sides of music. I will strive to cultivate high levels of music making through emotional expression and artistry while also providing students with the space to collaborate, problem solve, and communicate with one another through their musical work.
Providing a strong foundation of instrumental technique, theory, and musical literacy are the building blocks of a students’ ability to create music. Without fully understanding the basics of an instrument or the structure of music, students will have a hard time being able to find their voice in the music they are making. Structuring instruction around the needs of the student will allow for everyone’s needs to be met and help all students develop at their own pace. Starting off each class reviewing basic scales, articulation, and rhythm exercises while also expanding with more specific technique that applies to the music the students are currently working on will provide students the tools for success for musical expression.
Giving students the support and opportunity to participate in chamber ensembles allows for a more intimate environment for musical expression and gives students the opportunity to develop social connections with one another. Building in time during rehearsals for concert reflections and cooperative learning allows for more critical reflection while also giving the opportunity for students to communicate their individual thoughts with one another. Education beyond learning musical fundamentals allows for the cultivation of non-musical skills in an open and judgement-free environment. My instruction is student centered, inclusive, and allows for a collaborative environment where every student feels welcomed.
My purpose as an educator is to ensure that every student leaves my classroom with the confidence, artistry, and life skills to participate meaningfully in music and in their communities. Through developing strong fundamentals and meeting students where they are at; it is my goal to make sure students have the tools to meaningfully express themselves through the music they play. By providing space to communicate and support chamber ensembles; it is my goal to develop the students to become better people with music being a vehicle to do so. By appealing to both the aesthetic and academic sides of music, I aim to empower students to use music as a bridge toward lifelong growth and community engagement.
